I have shared my journey to the sewing world, how it has given me purpose and helped me retain my identity outside of "mom." So how did this journey lead to me opening my shop? I started my sewing journey doing bishops and embroidering EVERYTHING: pillows, sweaters, and just art in the hoop. So it seemed natural to name my hobby account SC Smocking.
However, as time went on, my interests developed into a love for heirloom sewing, and I started to research fabrics, laces, classic heirloom techniques, and fell in love! Throughout the raising of my first daughter and the expectation of my second (now almost 2 months old!) I sewed heirloom dresses and day gowns. This is my love!
I hope to capture the beauty and innocence of children, with the delicate fabric and sweet lace as ornaments for those dear angels.
You might be thinking, "What is Layette, though?!"
A layette is a set of baby clothes, take-me-home clothes, or even a general term for any items a newborn might need. It is a French word, which made me love the name all the more, a nod to my French heritage. Having had two sweet daughters in 15 months, I've been immersed in baby world for some time. And I saw a hole in the market... Where are the heirloom quality layette gift sets? You can always commission a bespoke set of course, and there are some beautiful sewing artists that do this. Sometimes the lead time is months and months in the future, and in today's world, we can't bet on months from now.
I hope to provide heirloom quality layette gift sets that can be ready-to-ship for a baby gift, a portrait session, and those last-minute-mamas. I hope to make the gift one-of-a-kind and special to the mama too, giving her a keepsake that will be kept for all her children and for the next generation!
But, of course, any artist can't help but keep creating and designing, and I am happy to do custom work to fix this artsy itch!
